Allen partnered with former Lodi employee Frank Wright. They leased their first two Root Beer stands to other operators so they could expand into the larger city of Sacramento. This was around the same time the partners coined the new name A&W®, “A” for Allen & “W ” for Wright.
A&W root beer stands continue to be a very popular stop when it comes to fast food restaurants, California being home to the most locations . There are around 1,000 locations worldwide with approximately 600 stands in the United States, but they ‘re not stopping there ! New restaurants are always popping up worldwide.
Originally, A&W Root Beer drinks sold for five cents. The rights to the A&W brand (except for Canada) are owned by Keurig Dr Pepper , which in turn licenses the brand to the similarly named U.S.-based restaurant chain. A&W Root Beer products are distributed via various U.S. bottlers.
A&W Root Beer is still made fresh in the restaurants from real cane sugar, water and a proprietary blend of herbs, bark, spices, and berries that are served in a frosty mug alongside burgers, fries, hand-breaded chicken tenders and other All American Food® favorites. There are nearly 1,000 locations worldwide.

Tricon owned Pizza Hut, Taco Bell, and KFC . It acquired seafood chain Long John Silver’s and root beer chain A&W Restaurants in 2002.

A&W got its start from the growing popularity of root beer in the early 1900s, and the chain has continued to capitalize on its signature beverage’s popularity ever since. With close to 1,000 locations throughout the world, the chain has held a steady hand in the fast food game.
According to its parent company, the shortage is purely a result of increased demand. And a sharp demand in aluminum cans might also be behind supply issues, as the pandemic has led shoppers to buy a surplus of canned sodas.
Hires Root Beer
It is, or at least once was, the main flavourful ingredient in root beer . Sassafras (a tree) and sarsaparilla (a vine) were traditionally used–along with other substances like licorice root , mint, nutmeg, and more–to flavour root beer .
What the panel loved most about A&W was its mellow, creamy taste—definitely the brand you want to pick up if you’re a fan of smooth root beers . A&W also got high marks for its sweet (but not too sweet) vanilla flavor.
